Howdy, Heroes! good eVening, Villains! it's your resident Gwenpool, checking in with a question for all you fine folks who've been yanked here willy-nilly from across the multiverse!
WHAT'S YOUR HOME LIKE? and also, slightly more importantly: WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN?
it's come across my radar that there are a few others of us out there for whom this isn't their first extra-universal rodeo, so to speak. not their first time crossing the streams. not their first trip to another world, is what I'm saying. so if you fit that definition, I want you to come talk to me! tell me all about the world you come from, the other world(s) you've been to, what they were like, how you got there.
if anyone who's smarter than me wants to take note of all this and maybe do some research on what the common elements are in these collected stories, by all means, be my guest!
as for me, I'm mostly just curious.
that's all, Gwenpool out!
oh wait, no, that's not all.
you should all go follow my pet landshark Jeff on instagram! I'm trying to make him famous.

Yes, that does follow.
[He does not like where this is going, and it is already entirely too late to not go there!]

right! so the reason I know all this stuff about other universes is because they exist in movies and comic books and stuff where I'm from.
the universe with the tower is called the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or Earth-199999 if you're a nerd.
I didn't know they were doing multiverse crossover stuff, though, that's pretty cool! sorry I missed it!
no subject
Just give him a minute here to sit with this. He'll text back again when he's ready.]
You're being serious right now?
Do you tell a lot of people about all this?
[He doesn't feel like he's exactly having an existential crisis - multiverse theory can support this without any massive implications for his own existence - but it is unsettling at best!]
no subject
I know, I probably broke your brain a little bit. I'm sorry.
most people I tell it to don't believe me, anyway. but I'd rather keep telling my truth than just lie about it, you know?

[It isn't as though Otto has the opportunity to blend in and pretend to be a normal person anymore. He's very visibly not. But tentacles or no, at least no one here actually knows what he's done. It's a great relief, yet that conversely makes him feel guiltier. If and when the subject arises, he doesn't intend to lie about his past.
.....he's not sure how much he wants to hear what Gwen might already know about it. If she's aware of the younger Peter's universe, then...?]
I have no reason not to believe you.
It's as you said - logically, everything must be true in some universe out there. Even things that would be considered impossible in my universe must have happened somewhere. It would be short-sighted to cling to my own pre-concieved notions - I met a wizard a day ago.
But it is still strange to hear.

[ The question becomes... Which Doc Ock is this? He doesn't know who the Avengers are so that rules out some options. He's either from one of the Spider-Man cartoons, or Raimi-verse. And without meeting him in person or seeing a picture, it's hard to know for sure. ]
you know, you're a lot nicer than I thought you would be.

[He gets laughed at for "Otto Octavius" when there's a man named Dr. Strange around?
But he doesn't get much time to feel indignant about that. He's grateful this conversation is happening over text; there's a long pause before he responds:]
I'm trying to do better.
Should I even ask?
[She clearly had expectations. Just as clearly, bad ones. He knows what happened with him, but he doesn't know how precisely it aligns with what she might have...seen in a film, like it was just an afternoon of entertainment - no. He can't go down that road. It isn't anyone else's fault.
(He definitely doesn't know enough about potential alternate versions to detail which one he is. It doesn't even come to mind.)]
no subject
of course, they could have changed his backstory for Earth-199999. like I said, I didn't get a chance to see his movie.
[ Yeah, here comes the awkward part. ]
idk... depends on how much you want to know? it's pretty clear you're not the Doc Ock from Earth-616, so I'm not going to like... hold you accountable for his crimes or anything.
and besides, I know all about villains actually being okay people. one of my mentors back on Earth-616 was Georges Batroc, aka Batroc the Leaper, classic Captain America villain.
(Cap is the one with the round shield, btw.)
anyway, Georges is a really great guy. so I'm sure you can be a great guy too, if you put your mind to it!

[He'd also rather not be referred to as a villain, but he's pretty aware that he missed the boat on that one!
Anyway. Maybe he doesn't need to know. Not right now, anyway. The fact that some stranger may have seen him at his lowest is certainly disconcerting, but he doesn't know how hearing her confirm that will help at all. Maybe he should just try to let it go.]
I appreciate that, truly.
[Also, what exactly did 616 Otto do? Maybe he'll just leave off asking about that unless it somehow becomes relevant.]
no subject
what do you want me to call you instead?
Doctor Octopus? or be less formal and just go for Dr. Octavius?
[ Or would that be more formal??? ]
I feel like I should do something to make up for breaking your brain a little bit...
except I don't really have anything to offer that you might want...
you can pet Jeff, if you want? he's really friendly.
no subject
[Doctor Octopus is worse! You see how that's worse, right?]
Don't worry about it. I'm fine.
I'll admit I'm curious about him, though. Did he come from your universe?
[Honestly secretly he would sort of like to pet Jeff; he just doesn't much want to ask anyone for anything these days, especially when they're very clearly aware of all the awful things he's done.]
no subject
he came from Earth-616, which is the universe I was in between my universe and here. an evil scientist named M.O.D.O.K. genetically engineered a bunch of great whites with legs and set them loose on Venice Beach, and my team and I had to stop them from, you know, eating people and stuff.
anyway, a few days later we confronted M.O.D.O.K. and his pals, and that's when I met Jeff! he's just a baby landshark, so I've been able to train him not to go around biting people unless I tell him it's ok.
no subject
[Really weird and a little upsetting, actually, but she's been kind about it. That's as much as he could've asked.
Also, hey, what the fuck? How is he, the robot tentacle guy, from the mundane universe?]
Do things like that happen there a lot?
no subject
oh yeah, crazy $#%@ happens all the time on Earth-616. we've got mutants, mutates, inhumans, aliens, gods, wizards, demons, vampires, ghosts... you name it!
no subject
[He can't really prove a negative! But if there are ghosts or aliens, they certainly aren't as well-known as they seem to be in her world. Peter probably would have known; watch Peter have fought an alien ghost or something after he died.]
We have Spider-man.
no subject
one of those universal constants. I guess.
[ Correlation? Causation? Who knows. They just go hand in hand. ]
no subject
[Though that is an...interesting universal constant, to be sure!]
Are there any other constants like that?
I had an old friend named Curt Connors in my world. He was doing perfectly well, the last I saw of him, but I met another who was...not.
I'd like to know how worried I should be.
[He doesn't bring up Norman. He wants to know, but if it's what he expects, he's not going to just tell all and sundry that Norman's here.]
no subject
Gwen almost wishes she could have seen this movie. ]
WELL I MEAN... if you're specifically worried about the Curt Connors from your universe, I think you don't have anything to worry about. history there is sort of settled.
but Curt Connors does become a villain in other universes, yeah.
no subject
Well. Thank you for telling me about mine, anyway.
Curt is a good man. He doesn't deserve any of this.
[Good or not, Otto knows it easily could have happened regardless. But at least it seems like one of their old cohort got out with his life and sanity.]
