Gritty is at least visible year round, so the kids don't freak out as much as they do with that creepy Elf on the Shelf. Those things are terrifying even to someone used to seeing the creepier side of life.

Mari Lwyd is a Welsh tradition. Wassailers parade a zombie horse around and people are supposed to sing to it before feeding them.

Sinterklaas would be a good explanation about people who had been snatched and forced into slavery or labor.
