[At 12:00 noon EST, Deputy Mayor Mayuko Shiraki issues a public statement, broadcast through the news networks of Sunset Falls, Massachusetts and its neighboring cities. The city government’s social media experts make a clip for distribution shortly thereafter and send it out. It begins with a cut of the local news anchors on standby for the briefing, discussing the state of affairs in studio: the mayor’s disappearance and reappearance in Arcadia, the deputy mayor being elevated to mayor-interim. A signal comes from offscreen, and the lead anchor says, “We now take you to the Hall of Dark Truths for an announcement from Mayor-Interim Shiraki.”]
[The footage transitions to... a briefing room. That naming convention is pretty typical for Sunset Falls. As its name suggests, the lighting is more dim than usual, mostly focused around the stage. Mayuko, in her best blouse and slacks, is standing behind the jet-black podium, its city seal with figures depicted among tentacles. So many tentacles. She looks into the camera and speaks with all the authority of her office:]

Our mayor, Loki Odinson, has been a guest of the Guardian Alliance in Arcadia since June the eighteenth. This absence, through no fault of his own, brings harm upon our city. The mayors and deputy mayors of Sunset Falls are bound by oath to protect the city, becoming the targets of a death curse in place of every soul residing here. Every. Soul. As well-meaning as Arcadia’s actions were, half of the city’s protection has been taken across the country, and said curse begins its descent. The culmination will be utter destruction by hellmouth.
In order to forestall that fate, I have assumed the complete curse and subsequent responsibility for protecting Sunset Falls. All praise to my patroness, Pallas Athena, stormy-eyed, unwearying, for lending me her strength. This empowerment was performed with the consent of and through the auspices of the respected city council. Sunset Falls will be sustained through their blessing. However, the overall balance, the ethereal balance, will not be fully restored. Not until Mayor Odinson returns.
Fellow citizens, know that this is a drastic measure. One that was deeply deliberated on. The sacrifices made were deemed necessary. On behalf of the council and combined departments within the city, we urge all citizens to avoid extraneous summonings, hexes and necromancy to allow the hellmouth’s excess energy to abate. We extend our best wishes, and hope that Mayor Odinson’s recovery from his injuries has continued swiftly and fully. Thank you, and as always, be watchful in the night.
